The 13 Best Haunted House Movies And Where To Watch Them

I don’t know if that’s true, but there were certainly nights growing up where it seemed at least plausible. Our favorite haunted house movies can create that plausibility in a variety of ways. Produced and directed by the king of the gimmick, William Castle, this Vincent Price vehicle followed a group of people who agree to be locked in a large haunted house overnight for a chance at $10,000. Their millionaire host and his wife have all sorts of spooky plans to help scare them out of their chance at cash, making for a fun twist on the haunted house tale. Despite some scares and suspense building, there aren’t any actual ghosts in this movie- just a vicious spousal spat that culminates in murder plots. The 1999 remake made sure to include them, but of course, we pay our respects to the original.

Both the racism and supernatural horror in "Them" has a creeping and hidden quality at first. It is hidden in plain sight but slowly reveals its true face, which is every inch as vile and hideous as you'd imagine. "Them" is a story of a family striving to fit into a world that won't accept them and a house that hates them. It's designed to get under the viewer's skin for a reason and it achieves it with both style and substance. For every haunted house there's a cynical skeptic who will dismiss any night terrors as the product of an over-active and over-wrought imagination.

The Woman in Black

Yet it’s also a thoroughly engrossing and genuinely frightening haunted house story, the kind of thing that will have you watching it over and over again, looking for all the hidden specters. The UK’s Broadcasting Standards Council reportedly received more than 20,000 phone calls and thousands of letters—all of them angry—following the initial broadcast. The Innocents wasn’t a pioneering haunted house movie, nor is it the most famous.

At heart, it is still a monster movie and filled with a sense of fun and a great deal of pitch-black humor. In one of its more memorable moments, a milkman is sucked into the rear compartment of his truck as red blood mingles with the white milk from smashed bottles leaking out the back of the truck and streaming down the street. Just after Frank agrees to join the hunt for his baby, the film cuts to the back of an ice cream truck with the words “STOP CHILDREN” emblazoned on it. It’s a movie filled with great kills, a mutant baby—created by make-up effects master Rick Baker early in his career, and plenty of action—and all in a PG rated movie!

However, it became a sensation when lyrics were later added, and it was even performed by Frank Sinatra. Hausu's over-the-top subject matter isn't for everyone, but horror fans — particularly of Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992) — will find the movie resonating with them. The success of Jaws (1975) inspired Toho to make Hausu, and none of the lead actresses were trained thespians.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (

It’s a horrifyingly atmospheric thriller that’s torturous in its quietness, making every twitching curtain and figure walking across the frame a silent terror that will imprint on your retinas. The performances are all believable and fragile, the costumes magnificent and the color contrast striking. To this day, it is one of the most visually flawless (not to mention flat-out terrifying) black-and-white movies you will ever see. Every frame truly is a painting in this master stroke that’s waiting, begging to be recognized. The second appearance on this list by gimmick master William Castle, House On Haunted Hill is seemingly as barebones B-horror as you can get.

What to Watch

As well as documenting the plight of the Perron family featured in "The Conjuring" they also investigated the notorious Amityville House haunting. On its own terms, The Conjuring proves you can still create something exciting out of established haunted house movie tropes. Presenting a visit to a home haunted by a vengeful poltergeist as live TV, Ghostwatch really did convince some of its audience that they had witnessed a supernatural event. The title of this movie is more than an understatement when it comes to these stubborn spirits who have been haunting this New England property since the 1800s.

Helen Mirren stars as the widow who occupies a possessed mansion in this chilling story, inspired by real events. As if chronic sleep deprivation isn't scary enough, this 1999 film follows three insomniacs who agree to sleep in a haunted mansion as part of a sleep study. This mockumentary follows a family grieving the unexpected death of their daughter. As they mourn, they begin to experience supernatural happenings which possibly reveal secrets about their daughter's life.

Certain places seem designed from the ground up to play host to horrors. The one that brings us together today, though, is one that most of us find familiar. Our house, a place that could be cozy and modern or large and drafty — the common denominator is that a family of some manner calls it home. That’s what makes it so unsettling and terrifying when something evil begins haunting its rooms and halls. Guillermo del Toro is one of horror’s great visual stylists, but even by his standards, Crimson Peak is truly stunning. A classic Gothic romance full of decay, sensuality, and ghosts, it’s a film that feels like stepping into another world, a meditation on certain well-worn tropes that somehow emerges as something entirely new.

He is armed with a rifle and ready to kill on sight, having divorced himself from any relationship to the child. Then Frank finds his baby crying in the sewers and his fatherly instincts take over. With tears in his eyes, he speaks words of comfort and wraps his son in his coat. He holds him close, pats and rocks him, and whispers that everything is going to be okay. People often wonder how the parents of those who perform heinous acts can sit in court, shed tears, and defend them.

When you're half-asleep, moonlight and shadows can take the contours of the familiar and commonplace and transform them into something threatening and horrific. Likewise, nooks, crannies, and corners you pay no mind to in the waking hours become secret places where demons and ghosts await an opportunity to pounce. This Australian horror film brings the full force of the eons of the unknown to a time and place that are very present, as well as very easy to relate to. It is a tragedy that spirals into something utterly monstrous and captivating. A family mourning the sudden drowning death of their daughter Alice (Talia Tucker, who brings a notable weight to this character) suddenly find themselves at the mercy of an unexplained phenomenon.

Throughout, We Are Still Here is a modern haunted house classic with singular personality to spare. George C. Scott, haunted by the deaths of his wife and daughter in a freak accident, becomes drawn to a decades-old ghost story in a small town. Based on a legitimate ghost story classic by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting uses rich details in its surroundings to create a wholly effective horror movie.

Horror has always been at its best when exploring relatable fears through extreme circumstances. A horror anthology movie, V/H/S, follows a group of criminals who break into a house, only to find a dead man and a video tape. As they watch the tape, they see various horrifying tales...only to realize the dead man has now disappeared from his previous spot. Haunted Mansion stars Eddie Murphy as a workaholic who becomes trapped with his family when a rainstorm keeps them from leaving the house. During their stay, they get to know the haunted residents of the mansion and manage to discover their own hidden connection to the place. If you don't know what the "tree scene" is, you'll never get that imagery out of your head after watching The Evil Dead for the first time.

Constructed at odd angles with all manner of secret rooms, and an imposing spiral staircase, Hill House appears as if it was destined to be haunted. The most disturbing aspect of "The Haunting" is watching how events slowly get under the skin of the occupants and cause their mental unraveling, as their rational minds try and cope with the unexplainable. There is nothing visually shocking or disturbing in "The Haunting" by today's standards, but the film perfectly captures the psychological effects a supernatural experience — whether real or imagined — can have on an individual's mind. A TV series about a Black family relocating from rural North Carolina to an all-white Compton suburb in 1953 had the potential to be unsettling enough.
